This building is about cultural context. It is situated in the St Albans Conservation Area and Area of Special Archaeological importance, a stone’s throw from the ancient Roman city of Verulamium and houses an important collection of Roman artefacts. A welcoming entrance with two storey rotunda over a loggia and glazed arcade, the design draws inspiration from Romanesque architecture.
“The proximity to a historically important site means the buildings cultural identity and sense of place were of particular relevance to the design.”
